Tesla has started the roll-out of FSD beta, the predecessor of the FSD software that will enable large-scale autonomous driving with Teslas. The final version of FSD will follow this year, according to CEO Elon Musk.
Various Tesla owners can try out how FSD (Full Self-Driving) works in practice from last night. Tesla has begun to roll out the beta version to Tesla owners who have proven to be ‘safe and vigilant’ in Tesla’s earlier early access program. So it’s a limited rollout, which apparently came as a pleasant surprise to some Tesla drivers in the US. Various videos show up on social media of Tesla drivers trying it out. With FSD, the car can now navigate the highway itself, overtake cars at its own discretion and take exits on highways and at intersections with traffic lights.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk emphasizes on Twitter that caution is required and that beta testers must keep their attention at all times, be ready to intervene and must keep their hands on the wheel. The rollout is also very slow, so as not to have too many people test the system immediately. “Careful, as it should be,” said Musk.
FSD more expensive
FSD can be installed on cars that already have the necessary computer on board, which is always the case with recent Teslas. When purchasing a Tesla, but also at any time afterwards, you can purchase the FSD software package. At the time of writing, this costs € 7,500. Features are continuously being added to the package, of course via over-the-air updates. At the moment, Teslas with FSD can, among other things, change lanes themselves and take an exit based on navigation. ‘Summon’, which makes it possible to drive the car from the outside, is also part of FSD. According to Musk, the full FSD rollout is planned to take place this year, so that’s good news for those who chose it. For those who still want it, there is less good news. The early adapters got it for less, as $ 2,000 will be added to the price starting next week. Musk announced this via Twitter.
