The US road safety service (NHTSA) has asked Tesla to recall 158,000 cars. Potentially dangerous electronic problems could lurk.
These are Tesla’s Model S and Model X. According to the NHTSA, the on-board computer contains defects in some of those models that can lead to unsafe situations if the touchscreen does not work. For example, the rear camera would not work in some cases and the autopilot system and the turn signal would work less well. The systems to prevent the windscreen from fogging or freezing are also affected by the defect. According to the authority, this would have to do with the limited memory capacity of the on-board computers in models S and X. Older models, until 2018, have an on-board computer that could no longer handle it properly.
The authority made the unusual appeal to Tesla after further investigation that followed previous complaints in November. Then it turned out that copies of the Model S and Model X could possibly have problems with wishbones. Tesla has not yet responded to the letter from the NHTSA, but must respond by Jan. 27. If Tesla refuses to recall the electric cars, it must provide “a full explanation of its decision.”
