Tesla is making it possible for customers to pay for Tesla merchandise with Dogecoins on a trial basis. CEO Elon Musk announced this on Twitter on Tuesday. It is unknown when the trial will begin. Earlier this year, Tesla canceled payment with Bitcoins.
How long the Dogecoin merchandise payments trial will last, as well as the launch date, is unknown. The Tesla website offers clothing, coffee mugs and scale models for sale. Perhaps if the trial is a success, Tesla will eventually also accept Dogecoin as a means of payment for cars of the brand.
This is not the first time that Tesla has experimented with cryptocurrencies. Earlier this year, the manufacturer announced that it would accept Bitcoin as a payment method. Musk drew a line there in May because of the large impact of the crypto on the environment. The price of Dogecoin reacts positively to the statements of Musk, who earlier this year named himself ‘Dogefather’. At the time of writing, the crypto is at a profit of more than 13 percent and is now worth more than 16 euro cents.
