Musk: “We have to be tough”
Elon Musk is shutting down almost the entire Supercharger charging station division of Tesla. Approximately five hundred employees will lose their jobs. Supercharger director Rebecca Tinucci must also resign. Bloomberg news agency reports this based on conversations with insiders.
The Tesla Supercharger was originally only intended for Tesla vehicles, but since two years ago, electric cars from other manufacturers can also use the fast charging station. In recent years, Tesla has built up an extensive network of stations. The job cuts have surprised other car manufacturers. Tinucci’s departure also comes as a surprise to many employees. As one of Tesla’s highest-ranking female executives, she spoke at Tesla’s investor day last year. She did not respond to requests for comment.
Various American media quote from a leaked email that Musk is said to have sent on Monday evening in which he informed all executives at Supercharger of the measures. “Hopefully these actions make it clear that we must be absolutely tough on workforce reductions and cost reductions,” Musk wrote. “While some executives are taking this seriously, most are not.” Earlier this month, Tesla announced that it would cut 10 percent of all jobs, equivalent to 14,000 employees, this year.
