Volkswagen Beetle defeated
In Norway things are going quite fast with electric driving. The Tesla Model Y in particular is currently doing very well there. The Model Y has now taken a whopping 53-year-old sales record from the Volkswagen Beetle.
Is the Tesla Model Y the Volkswagen Beetle of the moment? No, it’s not going that fast yet and moreover, the Tesla Model Y can be compared to the Beetle in almost nothing except its somewhat convex shape. What is a given is that the Model Y, just like the Beetle, sells well and even led the European sales figures for a while. What else the Model Y has in common with the Beetle is that it holds a Norwegian sales record. The Beetle set a sales record there in 1969 with 16,706 units sold in one year and that record stood until recently. Quite an achievement! Since Thursday, however, the record has been held by the Tesla Model Y.
Tesla proudly announces on Twitter that the Model Y has taken over the 53-year-old record. Various Norwegian media confirm this and at Itavisen we read that the counter is now at just under 17,000 units. The Model Y is therefore the best-selling model ever on an annual basis. There was even a special website dedicated to the ‘race’ between the Tesla Model Y and the Volkswagen Beetle, which showed live whether the Model Y would dethrone the Beetle. Incidentally, Tesla almost held the record in 2019 thanks to the Model 3, but it was more than 1,100 units short.
How exceptionally high the number of Tesla Model Ys sold in Norway is, becomes clear when we compare it with the Dutch sales. To date, 1,596 Tesla Model Ys have been sold in our country this year. Less than a tenth of the Norwegian number.
