Interesting Top 10

There are numerous electric models on the Chinese car market. However, the absolute number one this year is a car from an American manufacturer. You guessed it: the Tesla Model Y is China’s most popular electric car so far this year.
The Tesla Model Y is in the lead several times in the Netherlands. The electric crossover is not only the most popular electric car in the Netherlands so far this year, but also simply the most popular new car in our country. The Model Y is also well on its way to taking the throne in Europe by the end of this year. And in China? Tesla’s Model Y are also not available there.
In the first three quarters of this year, 699,056 new Teslas were registered in China. That is more than 44 percent more than in the same period last year. Tesla is certainly not the largest car brand in China. That title goes to BYD, which registered no fewer than 1,977,687 new cars in its home country in the first nine months of this year (+67.66 percent). This gives BYD a market share of 11 percent.
The Volkswagen Group is in second place in China. The Germans accounted for 1,544,514 new registrations. That is almost 11 percent less than in the same period last year. The registration counter of Toyota Motor Corporation – including Lexus – stands at 1,397,165 units after the first three quarters of 2023. This puts the Japanese in third place. In places four to ten are Honda, Chery, Geely, Changan, GAC, Tesla and Haval.
Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y was by far the most popular new car in China, with 479,090 units registered in the first three quarters of this year. In the first three quarters of last year, 308,755 were registered. The Tesla Model Y is therefore not only the most popular electric car in China, but also the most popular new car regardless of the type of powertrain. Striking: no less than five out of ten cars in the Top 10 are BYD.
There are no fewer than 5 BYDs in the Top 10, including this interesting Seagull.
In second place is the BYD Qin, a relatively broad model family that includes sedans with petrol engines, plug-in hybrid powertrains and electric powertrains. 350,544 Qins have already been registered this year. The BYD Song Plus – the updated version of which comes to the Netherlands with an electric drivetrain as Seal U – is in third place with 293,775 registrations.
Fourth place goes to the BYD Yuan Plus (290,370 units). You know that car in the Netherlands as the BYD Atto 3. The BYD Dolphin, also available in the Netherlands, claims fifth place with 260,456 registrations. In places six and seven are two Volkswagens that are not available in the Netherlands: the Lavida and the Sagitar. The Haval H6 and GAC Aion Y follow in eighth and ninth places. The Top 10 is closed by – again – a BYD, the Seagull. The electric BYD Seagull is the little brother of the Dolphin and could also be an interesting car for the Netherlands.
Electric city cars such as the ever-popular Hongguang Mini EV from Wuling are not included in the figures.
