Tesla Model Y or Kia Picanto: what will be the most popular car of 2023?

The Peugeot 208 was the car of which by far the most units were registered in 2022. One thing is certain: the Peugeot 208 will not be the registration winner of 2023. But who will be? Most likely the Tesla Model Y… or the Kia Picanto!

Of the more than 312,000 new passenger cars registered in the Netherlands in 2022, no fewer than 9,640 were a Peugeot 208. The little Frenchman was by far the most popular new passenger car in our country. The Kia Picanto followed in second place and number three was also a model from the Koreans: the Niro. Kia’s tireless compact success can win the title of ‘most popular new car of 2023’ this year, but the brand will have to be lucky. Lots of luck.

If we look at the registration figures up to and including November, the Kia Picanto is in second place. This year, 10,144 Kia Picantos have already been registered, considerably more than last year. The car he has to tolerate so far is easy to guess. Indeed: the Tesla Model Y. 12,254 new units of the Tesla Model Y were registered in the first eleven months of this year. Should Tesla start to worry? It doesn’t seem like that. The Model Y is more than 2,100 ahead of the Kia Picanto. This means that Kia must register at least 2,100 more units of the Picanto than Tesla of the Model Y in December this year in order to dethrone the Model Y. In November, 929 new Kia Picantos were registered. 1,323 copies of the Model Y. So it doesn’t seem to be really exciting.

And numbers three through five? These also seem to be fairly established. Last year’s winner – the Peugeot 208 – is currently in third place with 8,925 registered copies in the first eleven months of this year. It is more than 1,300 registrations ahead of number four: the Volvo XC40. That car, in turn, manages to stay ahead of the Volkswagen Polo by about 700 units.

Volkswagen vs Kia

When two dogs fight over a bone, Volkswagen walks away. While the Model Y and Picanto are trying to compete against each other on a monthly basis this year, it remains to be seen whether Kia or Tesla will also become the car brand that has registered the most cars in 2023. In the first eleven months of 2023, Volkswagen registered a total of 32,262 registrations, which puts it at number one for the time being. Kia is in second place with 31,385 registrations in the period up to and including November. The difference between the two: almost 880 cars. We are curious whether Kia will be able to catch up.

Toyota is currently at number three with 23,243 registered cars in the first eleven months of this year. The gap to Kia is enormous and so Toyota no longer has to count on second place. For the time being, Skoda, Peugeot, Renault, BMW, Hyundai, Tesla and Volvo are in positions four to ten.

What is your winner of 2023? Of course, this does not necessarily have to be the car with the most registered copies. Let us know in the comments! In doing so – we cannot repeat this often enough – be a little kind to each other.
