Tesla moves closer to self-driving cars in China

A surprise visit by Tesla CEO Elon Musk to China has cleared some crucial hurdles to the introduction of his self-driving car software in the country.

Tesla will work with Chinese tech company Baidu to implement mapping and navigation functions in its cars, sources say. Tesla has also met an important data security and privacy requirement in China. Concerns about this have long hindered CEO Elon Musk from rolling out his self-driving software, called Full Self-Driving (FSD), in China.

Musk visited senior officials in China on Sunday to discuss the introduction of Tesla’s autonomous driving software. Tesla introduced its autopilot software FSD four years ago. However, this has yet to become available in China, despite this being one of Tesla’s most important markets.
