Tesla is moving its headquarters from California to Texas, says CEO Elon Musk. The head office will be located next to a new factory of the brand.
The news doesn’t come completely out of the blue, as Tesla’s press releases have been prefixed with “Austin, Texas” instead of “Palo Alto, Calif.” in recent days. Moreover, Musk has been flirting with the idea of moving his company to Texas for some time. That was the case in 2020, for example, when he threatened to take that step in response to extensive lockdown measures on the American west coast.
However, that’s not Musk’s only complaint about its current location. California is also said to be too cramped and crowded, making it difficult for employees to find a home. Taxes are also too high and California in general is a very expensive place to live. Those seem valid arguments, because Tesla is joining a long line of tech and other companies moving from California to – especially – Texas. Oracle and HP already preceded Tesla and Apple is currently building a large campus in Austin. Toyota has already moved its American base to ‘The lone star state’.
The choice for Austin has in fact already been made before, because Tesla is already building a factory there for, among other things, the Cybertruck. Moreover, Musk reportedly now also lives in Austin. The high-profile CEO emphasizes that his brand will not leave California for the time being, because the factory may remain there and may even increase production considerably, Reuters reports.
