Tesla: No approval for Full Self Driving this year after all

Tesla seemed so confident, but the Americans probably won’t be able to get approval this year to deliver its cars internationally with Tesla’s Full Self Driving system.

Earlier this year, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed the expectation that it might deliver cars in Europe with Tesla’s Full Self Driving system this year, but the Tesla boss seems to be back on that. Automotive News reported through Musk that Tesla does not expect to have approval for delivery of the system this year.

Tesla’s Full Self Driving System (FSD) is an expensive addition to Tesla’s Autopilot that will enable cars with FSD to independently change lanes and park fully autonomously. Although the name suggests otherwise, it is not a system that makes fully autonomous driving possible. Tesla also says that drivers with FSD must still supervise. For €7,500 you can order the FSD option in the Netherlands, although that variant of the system is not (yet?) able to change lanes itself, for example.

According to Automotive News, Elon Musk aims that Tesla will probably have improved FSD software ready by the end of this year, but that smart software does not mean that no one will have to sit in the driver’s seat anymore. However, according to the CEO, Teslas with FSD could drive you from your home to work without having to touch the steering wheel during that drive. Musk hopes to be able to demonstrate next year that Tesla’s FSD system is safer than the average motorist, writes Automotive News.
