The first of its kind
Tesla started construction on Thursday on a factory in Shanghai where Megapack energy storage systems are made. The factory should be operational early next year. Chinese Vice President Tao Lin calls it a milestone.
The new factory will be approximately 200,000 square meters in size and will cost more than $200 million to build. The factory is the first of its kind for Tesla outside the United States. It is planned that 10,000 Megapacks will be produced annually in Shanghai, where Tesla also has a huge electric car factory.
Megapack batteries are almost the size of a shipping container and can be used for wind and solar farms to temporarily store energy. A Megapack can provide an average of 3,600 houses with energy for an hour. Tesla already has a Megapack factory in Lathrop, California.
