The only 5 Series with a petrol engine only
As long as the BMW 5-series has existed, there has also been a 520i. So of course the new one is also available as the 520i. Although, it may not be that natural. The focus during the first test of the BMW 5 Series was mainly on the electric i5. In that light, how do you like the only 5-series with only petrol power?
Where does the BMW 520i rank in the BMW 5 Series pecking order?
The BMW 520i is the absolute basic engine of the new BMW 5-series range. Together with the 520d, it is also the only version with only petrol power. In practice, you won’t really see much of the new BMW 520i. Thanks to the lower BPM, the much stronger 530e only costs a few thousand euros more and then you have one and a half times the power.

How much power does the BMW 520i have?
That depends a bit on how much charge there is in the battery. The BMW 520i is a mild hybrid, so the starter motor can help a little with driving. It’s only 18 hp, but every little bit helps. At full power, the 5 Series can produce 208 hp. The 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine itself is good for 190 hp and 310 Nm. The latter is especially nice, because it is already available at 1,500 rpm. As long as you don’t ask too much, the 5-series with basic engine feels nice and smooth. But if you kickdown, the reserve turns out to be considerably smaller than you might have thought and the engine also sounds quite stressed. Fortunately, the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission does its best to keep the revs nice and low.
There is little to complain about the finish of the BMW 5 Series.
Does the BMW 520i drive like a BMW?
Certainly. And especially if you take the trouble to select options such as the Adaptive Chassis Professional on the 520u. Then the BMW 5-series feels like a cumbersome sloop, or a surprisingly dynamic car. Four-wheel steering is also included, helping to shorten the 5 Series’ turning circle in town and increase the 520i’s stability at high speed. Of course, it won’t be really sporty, it remains a car of 5 meters long. But he really does turn the corner when he has to.
iDrive with button, so it works well in the BMW 5 series.
And the rest of the BMW 5 Series?
Apart from the tachometer, the interior of the BMW 520i is exactly the same as the previously driven i5. And you can also magic that tachometer away thanks to the digital instruments. It is ultra-modern, very easy to operate thanks to a battery of physical buttons and the finish is beautiful. Special mention also for the chairs, which are really fantastic. Of course, the above depends on how much money you want to spend on a 5-series. Everything is possible until your budget runs out. However, the space on the back seat is a bit disappointing for such a large car. Apparently this is due to the enormous trunk.
