New hybrid, small difference
Toyota gives the current Yaris a slight update. The Toyota Yaris is now available as a Hybrid 115 and Hybrid 130. Is the Toyota Yaris Hybrid 130 really as new as it sounds?
So, a whole new hybrid powertrain for the Toyota Yaris?
Yes and no. The Toyota Yaris was available with a 116 hp hybrid powertrain and the Toyota Yaris Hybrid 130 is now available in addition. But unlike the Corolla, for example, the basis of both hybrids is the same. The Toyota Yaris Hybrid 130 therefore has the same 1.5-liter three-cylinder combustion engine as the Yaris Hybrid 115. The difference lies in the electrical part. The electric motor of the Yaris Hybrid 130 is 3 hp and 45 Nm stronger and the power control unit can ‘mix’ more of the electric power. The result is 14 hp more and the sprint from 0-100 takes 9.2 seconds instead of 9.7 with the Yaris Hybrid 115.
Does that make a big difference for the Toyota Yaris?
Not like the larger models. There you really benefit from the larger combustion engine, which brings more peace of mind. That is not the case here as the Toyota Yaris Hybrid always has a 1.5. The fact that the electric motor can add more power is nice, but that power ultimately comes from the 1.5, which therefore has to work harder. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because the three-cylinder doesn’t sound annoying, but the whole experience is the same.
Always go for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid 115?
That depends on how luxurious you want your Toyota Yaris to be. Because the importer neatly cuts the Toyota Yaris delivery range in half. The bottom three equipment levels are available as Hybrid 115 (or as 1.5 non-hybrid) and the most luxurious three only as Hybrid 130. For example, do you want heated seats? Then you have to go for an Executive and that is only available as a Hybrid 130.
Any other changes to the Toyota Yaris?
The chassis of the Toyota Yaris has reportedly been adjusted very slightly, but you feel even less than the new drivetrain. It doesn’t matter, the Toyota Yaris is and remains a pleasantly dynamic car with sufficient comfort. And there’s a new 10.5-inch multimedia system and new digital instrumentation. The Japanese is still not a space wonder. So no really big news in that respect either.
