Citroën did great business with the C4 Cactus. Not only the appearance was controversial in 2014, the same applies to the philosophy behind the model. A light, economical car with the space of a segment higher. What does this mean for the practical consumption of the C4 Cactus? We find this out using the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. Used car buyers, beware!
When we say ‘light’, we mean light. With an empty weight of 940 kg, the C4 Cactus PureTech 82 Shine weighs no less than 20 percent less than a ‘real’ C4 from that time. The PureTech 82 is a 1.2-liter three-cylinder without turbo, which is also supplied in the Citroën C3 and Peugeot 208, among others. The more powerful variant with turbo produces 110 hp, but in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor the version with 82 hp is the most for.
Better than 1 in 20?
The factory promises an average consumption of 1 to 21.7, or 4.6 liters per 100 km. Owners of the C4 Cactus jointly note a practical consumption of 1 in 17.5. A positive outlier is the driver of a C4 Cactus that has achieved a consumption of 1 to 20.7 for more than 74,000 km, only 5 percent below the manufacturer’s specification. This expressly indicates to use an economical driving style at every refueling. It is the only driver who scores better than 1 in 20 in practice, although a consumption of 1 in 19.7 – as this owner shows – is of course nothing to be ashamed of.
On the other side of the list we see a sporty driver. This has been feeding the three-cylinder one liter of petrol per 14.5 kilometers for 35,000 km. With 1 to 14.7, another sporty rider does not fare much better.
The difference between the most economical and the most economical driver is no less than 42 percent with the C4 Cactus. Compared to the manufacturer’s specification of 4.6 l/100 km, users of the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor deviate an average of 26 percent, a value that is not surprising in this section.
