Turboless to low consumption?

The Mazda 2 has been running since 2015 and is not yet at the end of its career. The model was even recently refreshed and is now equipped with mild hybrid technology, which should be up to 7 percent more economical. Is that a good thing or necessary? Today we look at the consumption of the Mazda 2 SkyActiv-G 90.
Under the hood of the Mazda 2 we find a four-cylinder 1.5 engine. Special, because with competitors you mainly see more compact three-cylinder turbos. According to Mazda, an ‘old-fashioned’ engine is at least as economical, which the Mazda 2 can prove in this section.
Philosophy seems to work
Mazda’s philosophy seems to work, because on average the 29 Mazda 2 drivers on AutoWeek.nl score a consumption of 1 to 18.4 or 5.5 l/100 km. The top score goes to the user of this red Mazda 2 GT-M, which records an average consumption of 4.7 l/100 km over almost 20,000 km. It is not an outlier: two more owners drive on average more economically than 1 in 20.
Downwards there is a clear outlier, for which this driver is responsible. For five months and 3,791 km, he recorded a consumption of 7.6 l / 100 km, or 1 in 13.1. The subsequent waste king drove around for about 1.5 years and 17,292 km with a consumption of 6.5 l / 100 km, converted 1 to 15.3.
Comparable to competitors
The Mazda 2 scores significantly better than the – well, slightly more powerful – Ford Fiesta and slightly better than the – well, considerably more spacious – Volkswagen Polo. If you are not impressed by the achieved consumption figures and still want a Mazda, then the Mazda 2 Hybrid is a better choice. Well, Mazda? This is of course nothing less than a rebadged Toyota Yaris Hybrid.
