Almost half of all cars sold are higher models

To indicate how much the crossover and SUV trend plays in the Netherlands, we list the market share of SUVs and crossovers in 2022 per brand. This shows that 46 percent of the cars registered in the Netherlands in 2022 will be a crossover or SUV. Below we explain which models recorded remarkable figures and what the proportions are per brand.
The crossover and SUV trend is not over yet. On the contrary. Although the increasingly popular electric car thrives on good streamlining, models with a high body are immensely popular. Four of the five best-selling EVs in the Netherlands in 2022 are an SUV or crossover, if we also include the Kia e-Niro as such. Almost all brands have higher models in the range and many car manufacturers have these as the top sellers. To give you an idea of which brands this is especially true for, we’ve listed them all.
Alfa Romeo plays a margin role on the (Dutch) car market with 320 sales over the whole of 2022. SUVs Stelvio and the new Tonale accounted for 237 of those 320 units with 46 and 191 sales respectively, so you can say that the body shape – despite that the Tonale only came on the market later in 2022 – which is quite important for Alfa.
Bee Aston Martin five of the 31 cars sold were a DBX. The Vantage is doing significantly better there with thirteen copies, the brand sold as many of the Speedster as of its SUV. Audi sold 13,852 cars in 2022, of which 7,810 SUVs. Please note: 5,571 of these were an E-tron or Q4 E-tron, so Audi’s electric cars in particular are increasing the SUV share.
Fiat is the only one (almost) not looking for SUVs and crossovers
Bentley sold a total of 140 cars in 2022, of which 55 Bentaygas. BMW managed to sign considerably more contracts than Audi with 17,138 sales, but sold fewer SUVs. There were 6,208 in total, 2,808 of which were electric (iX, iX1 and iX3). BYD sold with 161 Atto 3s and 36 Tangs almost exclusively crossovers or SUVs. Only three copies of his only low model, the Han, received yellow badges.
Bee Lemon the crossover still plays a relatively modest role. 2,189 of the 8,422 cars sold fall into that category, thanks to the C3 Aircross, C5 Aircross and C5 X. Citroën’s topper is the more conventional C3, which, despite its relatively advanced age, still sells nicely (2,308 units sold in 2022). Bee Cupra we could count the Formentor as its only crossover, accounting for 264 of the 2,744 sales.
Than Dacia: that brand sold 5,615 cars in 2022, of which 1,057 were a Duster. Bee DS just under 60 percent of sales consist of crossovers and SUVs due to the 3 Crossback and 7. However, the 4 is the best-selling model there with 298 units. Proceed to Fiat: the crossover still plays a marginal role there, because the brand’s only offer in that category – the perennial 500X – accounted for 118 of the 5,627 registrations.

We just count it as a crossover: the Formentor.
At Ford, the hatchbacks are still doing better
Ford still has the Fiesta and Focus are toppers (3,175 and 4,170 units respectively), but also sold a lot of crossovers and SUVs with 5,846 units. In total, the brand managed to sell 13,358 cars in 2022; with 3,026 units, the Puma was the best-selling of the higher models. The brand sold 776 of the electric Mustang Mach-E.
Bee Honda more than half of the 1,065 sales were SUVs: the brand sold a combined 571 CR-Vs and HR-Vs. Hyundai has a slightly lower share of the 17,026 cars sold, with 8,229 crossovers and SUVs. The brand sold the most units of the i10, SUV Tucson is second with 3,715 units. In front of Jaguar is it really the SUV that strikes the clock: 189 of the 232 sales were an E- or F-pace.
Jeep, Land Rover and Lynk & Co are three separate cases with an offer consisting only of higher models. Those three sold 704, 1,432 and 5,847 cars respectively. In front of kia we therefore include the Niro, but not the EV6 – in case anyone has any doubts about that. After all, the Ioniq 5 was not used at Hyundai either. This means that the SUV share among those Koreans is also just under 50 percent: 14,049 of the 30,036 cars sold were higher.
One honorable mention in front of Lamborghini: the brand registered a Urus 23 times in 2022, compared to a total of 18 Aventadors and Huracáns. Bee Lexus the SUV share is remarkably larger: 321 of the 411 units were SUVs. With 85 pieces, the ES sedan is by far the most important low model of that brand.
MG begins deliveries of 4 Electric
Maserati sold 25 SUVs versus seven sedans and two MC20s, at Mazda was more than 64 percent higher on its legs: 3,685 of the 5,736 cars sold. Then the third of the German premium volume brands: Mercedes Benz. This was especially good for the A-class, C-class and CLA. With SUVs and crossovers accounting for 3,259 of 12,295 sales, that body style is less important to Mercedes than it is to Audi and BMW. We do not count the EQE SUV and EQS SUV (these sales are included in the EQE and EQS), but there are not that many of them registered yet.
Other news: MG registered the first copies (38 units) of its 4 Electric in December. In a year’s time, that model will undoubtedly be its topper; this year the SUVs are still the most important for the British Chinese. These accounted for 1,183 of the 1,503 new registrations. Bee Mini due to the Countryman, roughly a fifth was a higher model. That model accounted for 1,007 of the 5,563 sales.

You almost never see them instinctively, but Mitsubishi still sold more than 1,000 copies of the Eclipse Cross.
Mitsubishi only sold two different models: 1,043 crossover Eclipse Cross, 1,407 Space Stars. Also Nissan is doing well with its more adventurous cars, especially the Qashqai. 4,385 of the 7,304 sales were facilitated by its SUVs, of the Ariya the Japanese sold 341. The Leaf did significantly better with 906 units.
Cayenne keeps Taycan away from Porsche throne
More volume brands: Opel and peugeot. The German of those two sold 4,975 crossovers and 13,505 cars in total. The Corsa was by far the most important at Opel with 6,669 units. Peugeot managed to sell 5,323 units of the 2008, thanks to its choice of ICE and EV powertrains. In total, the brand’s higher models accounted for 7,919 of the 21,242 sales.
Than Porsche: 874 of 2,244 units was a high model, the Cayenne with 726 units sold just trumps the Taycan (715 units sold) as the best-selling model. Bee Renault the Captur was the most popular, accounting for 4,926 of 7,777 crossover sales. The brand wore out a total of 16,570 cars. Rolls Royce slashed six Cullinans out of eleven sales.
seat has comparable sales ratios to Ford. Even so, the Spaniards sold more low than high models and his ‘more traditional’ Ibiza and Leon accounted for the largest numbers. 1,952 of the 5,069 cars sold was an Arona, Ateca or Tarraco. Group mate Skoda knows a different story. There the Enyaq does very well, for 5,467 of 10,121 SUV sales. In total, the brand signed for 14,953 2022 registrations.

The Porsche Cayenne is more popular than the electric Taycan.
SUV share at Volvo quite large
If we don’t see the Outback as a crossover, we can go for it Subaru say that more than two-thirds of cars sold are crossovers or SUVs. The brand sold 54, and the Outback twenty. Yes, 74 cars in total. Suzuki sold 2,322 tall cars in 4,708 total sales, not counting the Ignis.
We don’t, because at Toyota we also do not count the Aygo X. As a result, we can say that about 40 percent of Toyotas are higher, with 10,292 of the 25,362 units sold. Tesla hardly registered copies of the Model X and 3,892 units of the Model Y, of which 2,298 (!) in December. In total, the brand sold 4,855 cars in 2022.
Which brings us to the last two: Volkswagen and Volvo. With the Germans, almost half of the 2022 cars were higher, the Swedes made it a lot more colorful. In fact, the last brand in the list has the highest SUV share in its 2022 sales. No fewer than 10,088 of the 12,891 Volvos registered last year were SUVs, 6,821 were XC40s.
Total market share
If we add everything together, then a total of 144,064 SUVs and crossovers were registered in the Netherlands in 2022. With a total sales number of 312,129 cars, this gives a market share of 46 percent for the higher models. Shall we calculate that again next year?
