The range of electric cars is increasing by the month, so this year’s list of cheapest electric SUVs and crossovers looks very different from last year. Where the price difference between the number 1 and 10 last year was no less than 39 mille, in 2021 the two will only be more than €9,000 from each other.
In terms of electrification, the Dutch car market, together with that of countries such as Norway, leads the way in Europe. There are tax incentives and the charging infrastructure that has been built up in a relatively short period of time also ensures that the electric car thrives in our corner of the world. Of course, the electric car elsewhere in the world is increasingly democratizing due to a combination of growing demand and an increasing supply of ‘affordable’ electric cars. In this Top 10 we list the 10 cheapest crossovers and SUVs for you that you can buy in the Netherlands at the time of writing. That Top 10 looks remarkably different from last year.
Just like last year, a Chinese-made electric car is the cheapest electric crossover in the Netherlands. In 2020, the MG ZS EV was allowed to call itself the cheapest electric SUV-like in the Netherlands, but in 2021 the iEV7s JAC will take off with that title. For €30,650 you get a 114 hp electric compact crossover delivered with a 39 kWh battery in its bottom, good for a range of about 250 kilometers.
MG ZS EV (2019-2021)
In second place is the well-known MG ZS EV, although it is the facelifted variant that has been thoroughly improved on a technical level. The MG ZS EV previously always had a 44.5 kWh battery, but is now available with a 50.3 kWh large package (Standard Range) and with a no less than 70 kWh (Long Range) measuring unit. The €31,985 ZS EV Standard Range is 320 kilometers away, so more than 20 percent more than the old basic version. With its 70 kWh battery, the new MG ZS EV Long Range even achieves a range of 440 kilometers, although you have to pay €35,985 for that.
The Mazda MX-30 closes the podium and finishes in third place with a starting price of €32,990. This starting price applies to the unnamed basic version, a variant that, like all other MX-30s, has a 145 hp electric motor and a 35.5 kWh battery in its bottom. If you find the 200 WLTP kilometers that you will get far too little, you will have to be patient. Next year, the MX-30 will come to the Netherlands with a rotary engine as a range extender!
Stellantis
In a short space of time, the Stellantis brands have fired an arsenal of compact electric crossovers into car land. Before we tackle it, we take the brand new because newly facelifted Hyundai Kona Electric with us. The Kona Electric, even more idiosyncratic than before, has a starting price of €33,995 and thus finishes in fourth place. It concerns the version with 39 kWh battery and 136 hp electric motor. The Kona is also back with a 64 kWh battery and 204 hp electric heart, but you will lose at least €37,995 for that.
Opel Mokka-e
The first Stellantis EV in this list is also the youngest of the bunch. We are talking about the Opel Mokka-e, the electric version of the new Mokka introduced in the middle of last year. The Mokka-e in basic trim is good for fifth place and, although it has to do with a 7.4 kW on-board charger, it does have the same 136 hp electric motor and 50 kWh battery as its more expensive brothers. The first brother of the Mokka-e follows in sixth place. We are talking about the Peugeot e-2008 with exactly the same powertrain that is in the order books as Active from €34,730. The last compact EV from Stellantis in the Top 10 is the DS 3 Crossback E-Tense, an EV whose optical glimmer comes with a higher price tag. The DS Crossback E-Tense is available in the Netherlands from €38,190, although you immediately have the Performance Line version. He is in 9th place.
Trusted or unknown
The trusted Kia e-Niro, with 39.2 kWh battery and executed as ComfortLine, is in seventh place. The 64 kWh version costs €38,995 in the same trim, but falls outside the Top 10. The popular e-Niro is followed by the third and last Chinese-made car in this Top 10. Like the number one, it is a lesser-known : the Seres 3. The Seres 3 has a 52 kWh battery and can travel up to 320 kilometers (WLTP) on a single battery charge. The front-wheel drive crossover has a 163 hp electric motor on the front axle and is only available in one generously endowed version. Its starting price of €37,995 gives the Seres 3 an eighth place in this Top 10.
Volkswagen ID4
The last of the list of ten cheapest electric SUVs and crossovers is the Volkswagen ID4. Since this year, the Volkswagen ID4 is also available with a 52 kWh battery and a 143 hp electric motor. Volkswagen is asking €39,190 for this absolute basic version, a car of which the name of the version (Pure) also reflects this.
Outside the boat
The complete Top 10 of cheapest electric SUVs and crossovers has a starting price of less than €40,000. The list drawn up last year looked very different. From fourth place (Peugeot e-2008), the 40 mille barrier was already broken to rise to no less than €70,000 for the number 10 of the list, the Audi E-tron 55 Quattro. Cars with which we could have completed this edition without breaking the 40 grand are the Aiways U5 (€39,950) and Lexus UX300e Electric (€39,990).
