The 10 most important new electric cars of 2021

The start of a new year is always a good time to look ahead to what new cars are parked in the showroom. There are a lot of new purely electrically powered models on the market. We list the most important ones.

Tesla Model Y

It is no longer new, but still for us: the Tesla Model Y. In 2021, the larger brother of the Model 3 will finally be on the market in the Netherlands. The European copies will eventually be built in the new Gigafactory in Berlin. You can count on it that Tesla will make some changes to the Model Y before that. seconds. Initially we get the Long Range here, which will cost roughly € 64,000. The cheaper Standard Range will probably also appear in 2022.

Nissan Ariya

Nissan Ariya

Nissan and Renault have prepared a purely electric car-focused platform (CMF-EV) and from Nissan, the Ariya is the first car to be built on it. It is a medium-sized SUV, which is a whopping 20 centimeters longer than the Qashqai. It looks just as promising as the numbers. According to its creators, the Ariya has to reach about 500 km on one battery charge and has a minimum of 218 hp (FWD) and a maximum of 394 hp (4WD), depending on the chosen variant.

Renault Mégane eVision

Of course, when Nissan enters that market, Renault cannot lag behind. The Renault Mégane eVision will therefore be launched on the same basis as the Nissan Ariya. At least, that’s how we refer to him for the time being, because a definitive name is not yet known. The French are also still keeping concrete details of the production model under their cap, but carefully count on figures that are reasonably comparable with the Ariya. The eVision is a bit smaller than the Nissan; he seems to be a bit shorter than the Mégane hatchback. On the inside, it must offer more space, partly thanks to the drive components that are often concealed in the ground.

Mercedes-Benz EQA and EQB

Mercedes-Benz EQ models

Expect a lot of electrical news from Mercedes-Benz in 2021. At the bottom of the range, it is the EQA (photo) and EQB that will join the ranks in the new year. In short, the EQA is an electrically powered GLA with typical EQ design elements. The EQB follows the same recipe, but with the GLB. Mercedes knows how to keep technical details about the high-legged EVs well hidden, but count on roughly 400 km range. Incidentally, the EQA will already be unveiled on January 20.

Mercedes-Benz EQS

At the other end of the spectrum at Mercedes-Benz we will find the EQS in 2021. That will be the electric top model of the Stuttgart brand. Unlike the EQA and EQB, this will be a model developed separately from the ground up, a sleek four-door of roughly the same dimensions as the new S-Class, loaded with the latest autonomous driving technology. We can also expect a considerable range from it: Daimler CEO Ola Kallenius speaks of ‘the absolute benchmark’ in that area and refers to a range of over 700 km. That is promising!

Volkswagen ID6

Spyshots Volkswagen ID.6

Towards the end of 2020, Volkswagen shipped the first ID4s to the Netherlands and that model will get an important big brother in 2021: the Volkswagen ID6. As can be seen in the above spy photo, he is still dressed as a Peugeot 5008 around. Not completely out of the blue, because the ID6 is said flat for the ID4 what the 5008 is for the 3008: a variant with a bigger butt and more space in the back. Furthermore, the ID6 is expected to offer basically the same as the ID4, so an action radius of about 520 km and powers from 148 hp. Incidentally, the ID5 will also be released. That is precisely an ID4 with a somewhat sharper sloping roofline at the rear.

Audi E-tron GT

Audi RS E-tron GT

In February, Audi pulls the curtain off the E-tron GT, a flashy four-door GT based on the Porsche Taycan. Sometimes nice among all those electric SUVs that are coming. The range of four-wheel drive electro-brute probably starts with a power of around 400 hp, but there will in any case also be a real RS version with 680 hp. In it you charge 100 km range in five minutes and, according to Audi, you can travel more than 400 km with a calm right foot. Those who prefer a sporty approach can shoot to 100 km / h in 3.5 seconds. Who said electric driving can’t be fun?

Audi Q4 e-tron

Spyshots Audi Q4 E-tron

Such an E-tron GT is of course good, but those who want to do it a bit more ‘sensibly’ can also turn to Audi in 2021. Then the brand would like to refer you to the Q4 e-tron, which also comes as Sportback. Roughly speaking, it is the car that puts Audi against the Volkswagen ID4 and Skoda Enyaq from the same concern. It is an SUV on the MEB platform, with a power output likely from 204 hp to well into the 300 hp. An even milder version is also not inconceivable. The basic version will get rear-wheel drive, higher placed variants will get four-wheel drive. Count on a driving range of no more than 500 km.

BMW i4

BMW i4 render preview look to the future

At BMW they believe in an approach that keeps EVs close to combustion engine cars. For example, according to the ‘The Power of Choice’ principle, the Bavarian brand already offers an electrically powered variant of the X3 and the iX3, and the next X1 will also be marketed as an iX1. You should also see the BMW i4 in that line. That will be the electrically powered version of the 4-series Gran Coupé, with some i-design details. The 4-series Gran Coupé has yet to be revealed, but above you can already see roughly what the variant with electrical power will be. Undoubtedly, a power of somewhere in the 400-500 hp regions provides enough driving pleasure and a range of roughly 500 km seems realistic.

Ford Mustang Mach-E

Ford Mustang Mach-E GT

Actually, we’re cheating a bit, because strictly speaking 10 EVs have already been discussed. Still, we can’t ignore the Ford Mustang Mach-E. Although it has already hit the road in the US, we will not get it until 2021. However, it seems worth the wait. The Mustang name and its lines on an SUV take some getting used to, but the performance is promising. It starts with 258 electric horsepower on the front wheels and a range of 500 km. The top version, the GT, throws 488 hp to all four wheels and shoots to 100 km / h in 3.7 seconds. We will not get this until the end of 2021, but the milder variants will probably not take very long anymore.
