The 500,000th Mercedes-Benz G-class is nice and retro

Celebration at Mercedes-Benz and the Magna Steyr plant in Graz: 500,000 G-Classes have left the production line since 1979. The half-millionth G is immediately a very special one, with a nice retro sauce.

Since 1979, the Graz plant has been primarily responsible for the production of Mercedes’ legendary off-road executioner. Nowadays, this is no longer a variation on the original model, but the completely new model that saw the light of day in 2018. However, that car is so similar to its predecessor that it is easy to hoist it into a successful retro jacket. For the half-millionth G-class, according to Mercedes, that jacket comes from the 280 GE from 1986. We see a wonderful retro green, interspersed with functional matte black for the bumpers, fender flares and even the grille and headlight frame. The orange turn signals at the front are definitely a nice touch, just like the typical wheels. The retro theme is reportedly continued in the interior, although we have not yet seen any images of it.

Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, is not only responsible for the production of the G-Class from the start, but was also involved in its development. The G-class was once intended as a rudimentary workhorse for military use in particular, but has now become quite the opposite. The G-class will celebrate its 45th anniversary next year and that will certainly not go unnoticed. Mercedes-Benz promises not only the fully electric version that has been in the air for 2024, but also an update for the entire model line.
