The car news from 30 years ago – Out of the Old Box

Every week you will find all the latest news at the very front of our magazine. That was 30 years ago, when you couldn’t go to AutoWeek.nl for the news, even if you did. Let’s take a look at what messages would have been on the website at the time if it had existed at all.

The news pages of AutoWeek 17 of 1993 were packed with pieces, because there was no other place to share all the car news with our loyal readers. Let’s take a look at three striking news.

For example, we headlined ‘Fiat Tempra from the scaffolding’. With that piece of imagery we meant that Fiat had finished a round of innovations for the Tempra. Just like with smaller brother Tipo earlier in 1993, the nose was a bit overhauled, although it was perhaps less noticeable with the Tempra. The new grille caught the eye the most. Behind that grille, in some cases, something else happened than before. In other words: the Tempra received two new engines on the order list: “As with the Tipo, the engine range has been expanded with the new 1.8-liter power source, good for an output of 105 horsepower. Also new for the Tempra is the 1 .4-litre petrol engine, which forms the basis of the rejuvenated Tempra range.”

Aftermarket finery

Something more ‘spectacular’ news came from Germany and related to the Honda Civic. Huh, but that’s a Japanese, right? Yes, but in this case it was a list aftermarketextras for the then Civic, developed by Nippon Autosport from Freiburg. “Honda Civic drivers can make their car even more beautiful with the new sporty accessories from Nippon Autosport. This German accessory company has, for example, special rims, a sporty chassis (?) and sports steering wheels for the Civic and CRX. raise your Honda above the gray midfield, right?” Well, the latter would turn out a bit differently, because in the end it was precisely the non-modified Civics from that time that would stand out in the street scene. The Civic was quite a willing victim for many young tinkerers.

Spring offer

In addition to the Civic, we find an article about another Japanese, who was less popular in the tuning scene. We are talking about the still quite fresh fourth generation Mitsubishi Colt. It already had a nice standard equipment for its time and class with things like a split-folding rear seat, tinted glass, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and a windshield wiper with interval control. Mitsubishi added something extra in the spring of 1993 with the aptly named 1.3i Spring. Then you also got headrests on the rear seat, heated seats in the front and electrically adjustable and heated side mirrors. Price tag: just under 29,500 guilders.

Finally, we take a look at the calendar of events from 30 years ago. There was plenty to do, especially on April 30, because then we still celebrated Queen’s Day on the 30th. If you could go back in time, where would you go? Or did you attend one of these events at the time? Let me know in the comments!
