Interesting price trend

The Dutch spent this on average on a new car

Used cars are more expensive than ever and new cars are not getting any cheaper every year. The average price that the Dutch pay for a new car has also increased. In 2022, they paid no less than 35 percent more for a new passenger car than five years ago.

The average purchase price of a new passenger car was more than 43 grand up to and including May this year. The Dutch paid an average of €43,072 for a new car. That is almost 7 percent more than in 2021, when the average purchase price of a new car was still €40,423. This is evident from figures from RDC and Bovag. Mind you, this does not concern the average new price of cars that you can buy in the Netherlands, but the average price of cars that have actually been purchased.

In five years, the average price paid by the Dutch for a new car has increased by almost 37 percent. In 2017, an average of €31,499 was paid for a new car. A significant percentage increase, but it is not unique that the average purchase price has increased by such a percentage in five years. In fact, it could be many times ‘worse’. For example, the average purchase price of a car in 1975 increased by almost 48 percent compared to 1970 and between 1975 and 1980 by no less than 68 percent.

Up to and including May this year, the average purchase price of a car with a petrol engine was €33,254, that of a car with a diesel engine was almost double that: €64,851. For a car with a power source that likes LPG in addition to petrol, an average of €20,353 was paid in the first five months of this year. That is not surprising, because the only cars that are delivered from the factory with an LPG installation come from Dacia.

And what did we pay on average for a new electric car? Hold on tight: €51,171. Hydrogen cars are even more expensive. For a car with a fuel cell – so a Hyundai Nexo or Toyota Mirai – the Dutch paid an average of €75,831 in the first five months of 2022. Just like the Toyota Mirai, a Hyundai Nexo has a starting price of just under €70,000.
