The Flemish subsidy fund for EVs is already empty, applications remain possible

Just like residents of the Netherlands, our southern neighbors can also apply for a subsidy for the purchase of a new electric car. What seems? The subsidy budget of €26 million provided in Flanders has already been allocated. More subsidy applications have already been submitted than can be awarded based on that amount. For the time being, Flemish people can continue to apply for compensation.

Since mid-February, Flemish people have been able to apply for a subsidy for the purchase of an electric car. The authorities had made €26 million available for this purpose. Reports from VRT show that the entire amount has already been forgiven. In fact: by mid-April, 4,980 subsidy applications for the purchase of a new EV and 932 applications for a second-hand electric car would have been submitted. If these applications are all approved, this would mean that €27.7 million in EV subsidies have been applied for. More than is in the subsidy pot.

The Flemish Minister of Mobility Lydia Peeters (Open VLD) confirms to VRT that the current subsidy budget is not sufficient for all applications. In addition, subsidy applications can now still be submitted. Peeters insists that every eligible subsidy application requested in 2024 will be granted. “Everyone who submits an application during the year that meets the conditions will receive a premium,” the minister promises.

And now? In any case, it does not seem to be over yet for the Flemish EV subsidy. It was promised in advance that additional money would become available once the current subsidy budget has been allocated. It is not yet clear where the money will come from.

In Flanders, you can receive a compensation of €5,000 on the purchase of a new electric car with a new price of up to €40,000 (with a maximum of 25 percent of the price). In Flanders you can expect to pay €3,000 on the purchase of a second-hand EV with an original new price of up to €60,000.
