The fuel consumption of the Toyota Aygo in practice

145,000 times quite economical

The fuel consumption of the Toyota Aygo in practice

The Toyota Aygo was a hit in our country. Since 2005, the compact, economical and affordable model has attracted at least 145,000 new buyers to the showroom since 2005. Did these buyers benefit from an economical car or did the consumption seem favorable mainly on paper? The AutoWeek Consumption Monitor provides the answer.

Strictly speaking, we are not discussing one Aygo in this article, but both the original version and the second generation. The new variant was delivered from 2014 and shares both its platform and the 1.0-liter three-cylinder with its predecessor. However, since 2014 the engine has delivered one whole horsepower and two newton meters more than before. It seems that this engine, type 1KR-FE, will see the end of the combustion engine, because it even reappears in the brand new Toyota Aygo X. There are currently insufficient consumption values known of this ‘cross-Aygo’ to also treat this car in this article.

Average consumption Toyota Aygo

Those values are there for the normal Aygo. No fewer than 74 Aygo drivers keep track of their fuel consumption in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. On average, they score a consumption of 5.2 l / 100 km, or 1 in 19.5. Outlier is an Aygo from 2020, the owner of which has recorded an average consumption of 1 in 23.6 for almost 80,000 km. This driver indicates that he consciously drives economically and that he mainly uses the Aygo on the highway, a combination that clearly improves consumption. The question does arise: what do you have to do to achieve the manufacturer’s specification of 1 to 26.3?

The most unfavorable value is recorded by an ‘old’ Aygo, the owner of which registered the refueling between 2013 and 2016. An average of 1 in 15.8 was driven, which is hardly surprising for a car that drives just 5,000 kilometers per year. Not even with an economical driving style. Striking fact: the manufacturer’s specification for this car was 1 to 21.7 at the time.

Aygo is quite frugal

We can conclude that the Toyota Aygo is a pretty economical A-segmenter. The fuel consumption is on average slightly better than that of its arch-rival, the Volkswagen Up. The values are so close to each other that you should be able to achieve the same consumption with both cars.

So if you enter the used car market and are interested in an Up or Aygo, you can exclude the ‘consumption’ factor. If you are also considering the Opel Karl, then you have to take into account less favorable consumption.
