The most beautiful natural treasures in Europe

Csaba Daróczi, 1st place: “War and Peace” is what Csaba Daróczi called this picture, in which two male rabbits are fighting for their territory in the Hungarian Kiskunság National Park. He visited the colonies near the village of Bócsa 72 times in order to photograph as many scenes from the life of rabbits as possible. © Csaba Daroczi

A chilled bearded seal, fighting rabbits and a newt on a taxi ride - for the 30th anniversary of EuroNatur's "Natural Treasures of Europe" photo competition, the participants submitted over 3000 pictures of animals, plants and landscapes. We show the twelve winning photos.

This is a special year for EuroNatur: The Photo competition "Natural Treasures of Europe" celebrates 30th anniversary. What started in 1993 with 150 submitted photos is now one of the most renowned photo competitions in Europe. This year, participants from almost 50 different countries submitted around 3000 pictures of animals, plants and landscapes in Europe. Many of them impressively beautiful. And so it was not an easy task for the jury of nature editor Peter Laufmann, EuroNatur Art Director Kerstin Sauer, nature editor Xenia El Mourabit and Lisa Szmigielski from Gelsenwasser AG to select the winners. Because of the equal number of points, there are now two 6th and 9th places, but no 7th and 10th. We show the twelve most beautiful "Natural Treasures of Europe". The best photographs also appear as large-format calendars (available here).

David Oberholzer, 5th place: It couldn't be more relaxed: Photographer David Oberholzer found this bearded seal resting on an ice floe on Svalbard. Very carefully and slowly he approached the marine mammal, who watched him but remained completely relaxed. In this way he was able to get closer and closer through the loose summer ice and take different photo positions. © David Oberholzer
