The Netherlands among the best countries in terms of CO2 emissions of new cars

Relatively many new cars with low CO2 emissions are sold in the Netherlands. Only two countries in the EU are doing better in this regard.

The average CO2 emissions of new cars sold in the European Union fell last year for the first time in years, it turned out in June. On average, a new car still emits 107.8 grams of CO2 per kilometre. That was 122.3 grams a year earlier and from 2016 it had also increased annually. After years of rising, there is therefore a sharp fall again. This decrease is mainly due to a few EU countries where relatively many ‘clean’ new cars are sold. One of these is the Netherlands.

In Norway, the average CO2 emissions of new cars in 2020 were the lowest with only 38.2 grams of CO2 per kilometer, according to figures from industry association ACEA. In Norway, the sale of electric cars is booming. In second place we find Iceland, with 80.2 g/km, followed by the Netherlands with an average emission of 82.3 grams of CO2 per km. This means that in the Netherlands we are more than 25 g/km below the EU average and, moreover, well below the EU target of 95 g/km. Undoubtedly, electric cars also make a significant contribution here.

Not surprisingly, emissions seem to be closely related to the extent to which electric driving is already becoming established in countries. The ACEA previously underlined a link between a country’s wealth and EV share. Of course, the available charging infrastructure is also of great importance. So two things that are a must in the Netherlands. Not surprisingly, we see in the map above that the average CO2 emissions of new cars are also higher in the relatively poorer EU countries with little charging infrastructure. The United Kingdom is a notable exception. Incidentally, with 133 g/km, Bulgaria leads the way when it comes to average CO2 emissions from new cars.
