‘The Netherlands leads the way in electric driving worldwide’

The Netherlands is a global leader in the market for electric vehicles. Arcadis comes to this conclusion after an investigation.

According to research by consultancy and engineering organization Arcadis, there are enough different electric models available here and the market share of electric cars is also growing considerably compared to petrol and diesel cars. Furthermore, electric driving is relatively affordable here. According to Arcadis, there are currently 183 electric models for sale in the Netherlands and the market share will grow to 60 cars per thousand people by 2025. The Netherlands is also leading the way in the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles. Although the electricity network fills up quickly, it is reliable, Arcadis says. Incidentally, there are also areas for improvement, for example installing many more charging points in residential areas that are accessible to everyone.

The study looked at the Netherlands, England, Ireland, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Canada, the US states of California and New York, Australia, Singapore, Thailand and China. Arcadis thinks that by 2040 about 54 percent of all new car sales in these countries will consist of electric models. An important note is that Norway is not in the list of countries studied, while it is currently by far the furthest when it comes to the sale of electric cars. In August, for example, more than 70 percent of new cars sold there were fully electric.

Arcadis CEO Peter Oosterveer says in the report that an accelerated transition to electric driving, together with investments in clean energy and battery technology, is crucial to reduce emissions and limit global warming. Electric cars can play an important role in combating climate change, says Oosterveer.
