More than 350,000 fewer diesel cars in 5 years
The image of cars with diesel engines has not improved in recent years. In the Netherlands, the diesel car is therefore losing popularity. The number of diesel cars in the Netherlands is also falling sharply.
There are various arguments for purchasing a car with a diesel engine, especially now that the price of a liter of diesel is again below that of a liter of petrol (E10). Regardless of the cost, it is quite possible that you prefer the running and character of a diesel engine to that of a petrol engine. In recent years, the diesel engine has been increasingly put in the dark, especially since Volkswagens Diesel gate and similar diesel scandals at other car brands. The popularity of diesel cars is declining in the Netherlands and the number of passenger cars with a diesel engine in our fleet has also fallen sharply in recent years.
Of the 8,439,318 passenger cars in the Netherlands in 2017, 1,364,309 had a diesel engine. This means that about 16 percent of the Dutch passenger car fleet consisted of diesel cars. In the same year, petrol cars (6,670,480) accounted for a share of 79 percent. On January 1, 2022, there were 9,142,277 passenger cars in the Netherlands. Of these, 7,263,785 had a petrol engine under the hood. At the beginning of this year, petrol cars accounted for a share of 79 percent of the total vehicle fleet. However, the number of diesel cars in the Netherlands has decreased by almost 351,000 units between 2017 and 2022 to 1,013,354 units. At the beginning of 2022, only 11 percent of all passenger cars driving in the Netherlands had a diesel engine under the hood. A decrease of 5 percentage points.
Between 2017 and 2022, the number of electric cars in the Netherlands has increased enormously. In 2017 there were only 13,065 EVs in our country, so at the time only 0.15 percent of the fleet consisted of electric passenger cars. On January 1, 2022, there were 252,635 fully electric cars on the road in the Netherlands. So about 240,000 pieces more. At the beginning of this year, EVs accounted for a share of 2.8 percent in the Dutch vehicle fleet. The number of (plug-in) hybrid cars in the Netherlands also increased sharply between 2017 and 2022, from 239,483 units in 2017 to 499,656 units in 2022. Hybrids thus accounted for a share of 2.8 percent in the fleet in 2017. In 2022 for 5.5 percent.
The number of cars that like LPG in addition to petrol has been decreasing annually since 2017. Where there were still 140,750 LPG cars driving around in the Netherlands in 2017, on 1 January 2022 there were only 99,062. The number of hydrogen cars (FCEV) has increased more than tenfold between 2017. From 34 in 2017 to 542 in 2022.
