The number of scrapped cars is declining rapidly

Far fewer cars were scrapped last year than the year before. This is evident from figures from Auto Recycling Nederland, which is in discussion with BNR several reasons for the decline.

While more than 220,000 cars were scrapped in 2021, last year there were only 176,887, ARN reports BNR. A decrease of more than 20 percent. The number of scrapped cars has been decreasing for years; in 2018 there were still about 248,000, in 2019 233,000 (-6 percent) and in 2020 still 226,000 (-3 percent). However, last year’s decline was very strong.

According to Paul Dietz, director of ARN, there are several causes. First of all, the drop in new sales, largely due to the chip shortage. If sales of new cars fall, fewer will be replaced at the bottom of the line and therefore possibly scrapped. Furthermore, there was a dip in new sales 19 years ago, which may still have an effect today. Dietz points out that cars in the Netherlands last an average of 19.5 years. In addition, the export of used cars increased last year. “Especially in the group of vehicles from 16 to 25 years old. As a result, fewer wrecks ended up at the dismantling companies in the Netherlands,” says Dietz.

The fact that fewer and fewer cars are being scrapped is probably a thorn in the flesh for Climate Minister Jetten, who would prefer to rejuvenate the Dutch vehicle fleet at a rapid pace. De Bovag expects that the bpm increase planned by the same minister for new cars with combustion engines will counteract the rejuvenation of the vehicle fleet. Rai Verenging also fears that this could lead to further aging of the Dutch fleet.
