The number two most economical petrol without a plug

If you are looking for an overview of very economical petrol cars without a plug, you will certainly come across the Renault Clio Hybrid 140. It finishes in second place, behind the Toyota Yaris Hybrid. On AutoWeek it is possible to search in Carbase by consumption. The editors of Nu.nl recently did the same and that led to this top ten. Even more interesting, however, is what those cars perform in practice, and the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor offers a solution. In this episode of ‘So economical is’ we take a look at the number two: the Renault Clio Hybrid 140. How economical is that compact hybrid car in practice?
Toyota no longer has the realm in the compact class only for fully hybrid models. The Renault Clio Hybrid came on the market two years ago and it is a so-called full hybrid, not a mild or smart hybrid that involves light electrification. The electric motor is much more capable and allows the Clio to cover many more kilometers without emissions. Please note, it is a car without a plug, so you cannot charge the battery pack. In Carbase you have to tick ‘not plug-in’ if you are looking for a petrol car without a plug.
The Renault Clio Hybrid has a power of 143 hp. A 1.6 petrol engine is supported by an electric motor.
Average 1 in 20.3 in Consumption Monitor
According to the manufacturer, the Renault Clio with hybrid powertrain is good for 1 in 23.3 (4.3 liters per 100 kilometers). In the Consumption Monitor we see that the drivers of the Hybrid 140 average out at 4.92 liters per 100 kilometers in practice, so 1 to 20.3. That is the practical use. The most economical is 21.2 kilometers on a liter, where we see that it is about five refueling in the summer. The least economical is on average 1 to 19.1, but that is an average over a longer period and 14 refueling.
Don’t hypermile
The Clio Hybrid 140 has been included three times in comparative tests, in which the model has been compared with, among others, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid and the Ford Fiesta with a 125 hp mild hybrid powertrain. Each time, the editors arrived at a consumption of 1 to 17.3, which equates to 5.8 liters per 100 kilometers. Incidentally, the editors use the permitted speeds in their consumption measurement, also on the highway, and there is no question of hypermiling with 95 km/h on the cruise control hanging behind a truck.
Incidentally, another test with the Hybrid 140 will soon be in the pipeline, where we can already tell you that the conditions were optimal. Not too hot, no wind, and the Clio performed better: 1 to 19.6. The recently implemented update is bearing fruit, the electric motor received some more power.
The number one in the top ten most economical petrol cars without a plug according to the manufacturer, the Toyota Yaris Hybrid, was previously discussed in an overview of the practical consumption.
