The silly MRB policy of The Hague – Podcast

‘Audi R8 was un-Audi in character and appearance.’

Ford Tourneo Connect PHEV

A new episode of our podcast! Alfa changes the name of its car within a day, and Alfa is now exactly the brand we expect that to happen! Marco and Roy look back on the Audi R8, which has now really disappeared. And Marco suspects that the people at Euro NCAP also listen to the podcast, because sensible decisions are made there. That and more, enjoy listening!

This episode focuses on the Alfa Romeo Milano…ehhh Junior, the Audi R8 and the tax policy of The Hague, because the MRB policy is being overhauled.

Initially, a 25 percent rate would apply next year, but next year EVs will remain completely exempt from MRB. In 2026, the rate will increase to 60 percent of the petrol rate, in 2029 it will be 65 percent and then the full MRB rate will only apply from 2031. All in all, EV drivers will therefore be exempt from the full MRB rate for five years longer

At the same time, there is a setback for drivers of a plug-in hybrid. Expanding the MRB discount for EVs will of course save income and that is why plug-in hybrids would already be charged the full MRB rate next year. They now enjoy a fifty percent discount on the MRB. So that is not exactly a stable policy. Roy and Marco discuss how it got to this point.

Alfa and Audi

But first attention to Alfa Romeo, which changed the name of its new model within a day. You would say that is impossible, but it is not the first time that the Italians have made a last minute name change. We go through the examples. The men also look back on the Audi R8, which is no longer there. While it was a very cool car, which seemed to have more fans in the Netherlands than the average supercar from Italy or England.
