The W12 is dead, long live the V8 Hybrid

6.0 W12 replaced by plug-in hybrid V8

The W12 is dead, long live the V8 Hybrid

It’s over for the mighty 6.0 W12 from Bentley. The powerful twelve-cylinder engine makes way for a power source with four fewer cylinders. A V8, in other words, assisted by an electric motor.

You read that correctly: the 6.0 W12 is making way for a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Bentley announces that the twin-turbo W12 was installed under the Flying Spur, Bentayga, Continental GT and the Batur derivative. The W12 has to make way for a powertrain that the British have very bombastically baptized Ultra Performance Hybrid.

It obviously has a lot to offer. The Ultra Performance Hybrid powertrain consists of a V8 and an electric motor, a combination that together produces ‘more than 750 hp’. This makes the drivetrain stronger than the W12 has ever been on its own. After all, it achieved exactly 750 hp in the Batur. It is not known what part of the power comes from the shaft of the electric motor. Bentley also does not say how large the battery pack is that goes with the drivetrain, although it does indicate that the plug-in hybrid hardware makes an electric range of 80 kilometers possible.

Bentley promises to release more information in the coming weeks. Until we know more, we will have to make do with the above and a sound clip of the V8.
