iOS 11 brings a host of new features, including ARKit and a number of productivity improvements. These apps are ready with their latest updates. You can also read everything about what’s new in this major update in our iOS 11 overview.
1. Carrot Weather
Carrot Weather, the funny weather app, got an augmented reality mode in the latest update. In AR mode, you can see Carrot, the robot the app revolves around, in the real world. With gestures you can then choose which data she shows you. Carrot also reacts to your actions: we therefore advise against poking her in the face.
The app works exactly as you are used to. You can find the new mode in the menu at the top right, and it is a nice addition that makes the app just a little more fun than its competitors.

2. Holo
Holo has been around for some time, and used its own version of augmented reality to place virtual characters in your camera field. Now the app uses ARKit to do this, making the virtual figures appear a lot smoother. In addition, holograms of famous actors, animals and other characters are now shown life-size when you double-tap the screen.
Although the app has actually used some form of augmented reality before, ARKit makes the app a lot more useful. For example, surfaces are recognized more quickly, and the proportions of the existing characters are more in proportion to their environment.

3. Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade
We already saw this game during Apple’s ARKit announcement, but the update for Warhammer 40,000: Freeblade has now been rolled out to everyone. AR Photo mode allows you to put your character from the game in the real world. This way you can walk around it, zoom in, or even take a photo that makes it look like you’re meeting your character in real life.
The game does not use ARKit for gameplay. Still, it’s a nice addition to be able to ‘meet’ your character in real life, because this brings the game a step closer to reality.

4. SketchAR
SketchAR is an app that helps you make drawings and sketches, and version 2.0 of the app uses ARKit for this. You choose an example via the app, which you can then copy in the real world. You can also turn a photo into a drawing, to help you with, for example, sketching a portrait.
For now, you can only use A4 and A5 sized paper for your drawings. Also, you still need to put circles on your paper as a frame of reference for the camera. The makers of SketchAR are working on the possibility to work with ARKit on large canvases or even a wall.
