7 percent of tow cars for caravans are electric
The Netherlands is still known as a real caravan country. But what are actually the most popular tow cars in the Netherlands? Camping specialist ACSI looked into it. We are already giving away the most popular tow car: the Mazda CX-5!
Camping specialist ACSI has presented the results of its annual tow car survey, which it conducted among 3,792 Dutch caravan owners. What seems? The list of the ten most popular tow cars for caravans in the Netherlands consists entirely of SUVs or SUV-like vehicles. According to ACSI director Ramon van Reine, this is easy to explain. “The car must of course be strong and heavy enough to tow the caravan throughout Europe without any problems. In addition, the average caravan owner is a bit older and that target group prefers a high entry.” Undoubtedly, it is also a factor that SUVs and crossovers have gained considerable ground throughout the car world in the last ten years at the expense of more traditional sedans, hatchbacks and station wagons. and MPVs.
Although Dutch caravan owners’ preference for SUVs will undoubtedly upset climate activists, the Dutch caravan tractor is not that bad for the environment at all. “The average age of the entire Dutch fleet is almost 12 years, while half of caravan owners have a much more modern car that is no more than 5 years old. A smaller and lighter car would also have to work harder and consume relatively more fuel with a caravan behind it,” says Van Reine.
In the Netherlands, caravans are most often attached to the tow bar of which cars? The Mazda CX-5 is the absolute winner here. The CX-5 is not only the most popular tow car that caravan owners now own, but also the best-selling new tow car of 2023. Striking: the Citroën C4 Picasso and Grand Picasso is the only non-SUV-like vehicle in the Top 10. lists come by. In the list of most popular cars owned by Dutch caravan owners, we come across cars such as the Renault Scénic in 12th place, the Ford C-Max in 19th place and the Volvo V60 and V70 in 14th and 29th place.
