Car thieves are often very savvy. This is also apparent from a new phenomenon that has surfaced in Canada. There, Apple AirTags are used to strike often expensive cars when the conditions are favorable for car thieves.
No matter how well you pay attention to a car, sometimes it is parked somewhere where you have a little less visibility or where the chance of witnesses in the event of a theft is not great. That’s exactly what car thieves in Canada are now responding to with the help of AirTags, an Apple gadget that allows you, for example, to see the location of your keys or wallet on your iPhone so that you don’t lose it again.
According to the York Regional Police Department in Canada, resourceful thieves place the $35 mini transmitters in an inconspicuous place on cars. They can then track down the car and steal it in peace if the opportunity arises. At least five cars have been stolen in this way in recent weeks, the local police unit reported to the Canadian CTV News.
To prevent thieves from following your car, according to the police, it is better not to park the car on the street, but in a parking garage. The officers also recommend that you always lock your car – even in a supposedly safe place – with an external steering wheel lock. As far as is known, there are no known cases of theft with the transmitters in the Netherlands.
