Fabia with TSI: ideal Combi for low consumption?

Skoda likes to present itself as a brand for sensible motorists. They want a lot of space for little money, which is why the Fabia was delivered as a station wagon for a long time. In addition, calculating drivers pay attention to fuel consumption. Is the Skoda Fabia really a good choice for ‘savers’ or is that a bit disappointing? The AutoWeek Consumption Monitor provides insight.
In this article we take a look at the fuel consumption of the third generation Fabia. This saw the light of day in 2015 and was replaced in 2021 by the generation that is now in the showroom. Unlike in-house competitors, the Volkswagen Polo and Seat Ibiza, you could still opt for a station wagon at Skoda for a long time. The Seat Ibiza ST disappeared from the market in 2017 and we have not known a Polo Variant for over twenty years.
Consumption Skoda Fabia Combi
The station wagon variant is what really distinguishes the Skoda Fabia from its competitors, so it is not surprising that 25 of the 32 Fabias in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor are a Combi. If we look at variants with 1.0 TSI (95 hp) and 1.2 TSI (90 hp) petrol engines, we see an average fuel consumption of 5.8 l / 100 km. That corresponds to 1 in 17.4.
If we split these values into motorisation, the three-cylinder 1.0 turns out to be less economical in practice than the 1.2 four-cylinder. Owners achieve an average consumption of 1 to 16.3 with the 1.0 and the most economical driver records 1 to 18.2 over a distance of more than 56,000 km.
The ‘old’ 1.2 TSI appears remarkably more economical. On average, drivers with this four-cylinder engine score exactly 1 in 18, with an economical peak of 1 in 19.6 over a distance of almost 45,000 km. The least economical Fabia Combi 1.2 TSI ‘does’ 1 at 16.2. That is exactly the same as the most economical 1.0 TSI driver after almost 15,000 km.
Hatchback less economical?
As mentioned, we mainly find the Fabia Combi in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. There is not enough data on the hatchback to claim that it is more or less economical than the station wagon. To give you an indication: five owners of a Fabia hatchback 1.2 TSI together consume an average of 1 in 17.5. Anyone in the market for a Fabia with a 1.4 TDI diesel engine can count on a consumption of 1 to 20.8, based on the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor. The bandwidth varies between 1 in 18.7 and 1 in 24.2.
The consumption of the Fabia Combi 1.0 TSI with 95 hp is remarkably higher than that of the Volkswagen Polo. With the same motorisation, drivers of that car drive an average of 1 to 18.2. Anyway, the Polo is of course not a station wagon and you should actually compare the mentioned generation of Polo with the new Fabia type.
We are curious whether the new Fabia can compete with the Polo in terms of consumption. Do you drive a new Fabia and do you want to provide insight into consumption? Then keep track of your consumption in the AutoWeek Consumption Monitor.
