This is how far the Volkswagen ID4 77kWh comes in practice

The Volkswagen ID4 can be seen as the electric counterpart of the Tiguan, although the EV is now recording considerably better sales figures than the conventionally powered SUV. So the ID4 is quite successful. In this article we discover how far the 14,000 ID4 drivers can travel on a charged battery.

Volkswagen ID4 drivers can choose from two battery packs. The smallest has a net capacity of 52 kWh, the largest offers no less than 77 kWh of usable energy storage. The variant with a small battery is probably one for the museum, because none of the users who left a review on AutoWeek.nl chose this version. That is why we only look at the 77 kWh variant in this article.

Average energy consumption in tests

To determine energy consumption, we look at both our own test results and the values that users mention in their aforementioned reviews. In this way we arrive at a fairly complete picture, including outliers upwards and downwards.

In our own tests we pitted the Volkswagen ID4 against a Toyota bZ4x and the Kia e-Niro. Both tests were performed under very different conditions. In the best case, at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, the ID4 consumed an average of 16.8 kWh per 100 kilometers. This represents a maximum driving range of 458 kilometers. At lower temperatures and rain, the Volkswagen performed considerably less well. Consumption increased to an average of 22.3 kWh/100 km, causing the range to drop like a pudding to a maximum of 345 kilometers.

Consumption and range ID4 drivers

If we take the average consumption of 12 ID4 drivers, including our own test data, we arrive at an average energy consumption of 19.3 kWh/100 kilometers. Indeed, but slightly lower than the average result of our two tests.

The explanation is clear: users also report that the difference between heat and cold has a great influence on the driving range. “It is striking that you have to make a significant sacrifice when it is below 10 degrees and with autumnal weather,” writes an ID4 1st Max driver who received his car under such conditions. “Count on 300-350 kilometers. I still have the summer left,” he writes.

Another user, who gained 150,000 kilometers of experience with his ID4, explains what consumption can look like in the summer months. “I currently achieve 20.5 kWh/100 km, with winter tires and at low temperatures. In the summer, regularly 16 kWh/100 km on journeys of approximately 150 km, of which 90% are highway.” This represents a maximum range of 376 kilometers in winter compared to 481 in summer. On average, ID4 drivers get a range of 398 kilometers from their 77 kWh battery.
