The price of petrol is by definition too high for many people. In addition to the price of the oil, other factors also play a role. How is the price of gasoline determined?
The price of petrol is now around 2.50 euros. At another time you paid 1.68 euros for a liter. The oil price fluctuates, but what other factors play a role?
Part of the price is determined by the crude oil price and refining costs. These make up about 30% of what you ultimately pay at the pump.
Then there are the margins. They make up about 10% of the total. These two together also include the costs incurred by the oil companies to, for example, man a gas station and a shop.
This price structure can also be found in general terms for diesel and LPG, but the mutual proportions are different. And you can also take the differences in fuel into account when you buy a new car.
Excise duties and taxes
In principle, you can then buy the petrol at the pump. However, the government levies various excise duties on petrol. In addition to the well-known and temporary ‘Kok quarter’ that was introduced in 1991, there is also a levy that makes it possible to keep stocks of petroleum products. This accounts for a percentage of about 40% in the total price of petrol. And of course everything is concluded with 21% VAT in the price. Converted to the total, this makes up 17% of the price of petrol.

Differences in the price of petrol
You also see that there are differences both within a place and within the country. For example, unmanned petrol stations are often much cheaper, up to about 17 cents per litre. You also have less or no service at these stations. There is no shop and no staff to help you. That costs less and this is returned to the customers with a lower price.
In addition, you see that the price of petrol is higher on the highway. How did that happen? The locations along the highways are auctioned by the government every 15 years. Then an operator may rent it. Both the rent for the land and the auction amount are for the account of this operator. A gas station in any village or city does not have these charges. In addition, many of these gas stations are open 24 hours a day. This also leads to higher costs, which you will encounter in the price of petrol, among other things.
In the shops you will often find coffee, sandwiches, snacks and other things to eat and car parts such as windshield washer fluid, motor oil, wipers, interior cleaning and the like.
