Do you regularly visit foreign web pages and do you understand very little of the language you encounter? Instead of Google Translate, you can also use Safari on your Mac to translate pages into seven different languages.
Since version 14 of Safari, you will find a translation function in Apple’s browser. This is a beta version, so the translation service may not work properly yet. Moreover, the service cannot translate everything yet. For example, it is currently not possible to translate texts from and into Dutch. English, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, French, German, Russia, and Brazilian Portuguese are supported.
You can use the translation feature if your Mac is running macOS Mojave, Catalina or Big Sur. If so, open a web page in Safari in one of the seven languages supported. The browser will automatically recognize the language and then give the message Translation available in the search bar with a translation icon, which you can click to start the translation.
Icon not visible
If you are using the translation function for the first time, you will be presented with a pop-up asking if you want to enable the service. In this menu you can also get more information about the translation function.
By default, texts are translated into English and after the translation the translation icon turns blue, so you can see that the service is on. If you want to switch off the translation service again to see the page in the original language, click on the translation icon again and then on Show original.
If you do not want Safari to translate to English by default, you can also choose other preferred languages via the translation icon.
Also on iPhone
If you want to translate web pages in Safari on your iPhone, you can. In principle, this works in a similar way: press in the Safari search bar on your phone aA and press Translate into English.
Since the launch of iOS 14, Apple also has a separate translation app. With the app you can have not only written text, but also spoken sentences translated. Handy for when you travel! The Dutch language is not yet supported in this app either.
