If you have just bought new headphones for your PlayStation 4 or 5, you will of course immediately want to know how to connect them to your console. While this process isn’t complicated, the way you connect a headset can vary by version of the console. In this article we explain how to connect a headset to both your PS4 and PS5.
via bluetooth
Connecting a headset to your console via Bluetooth is not ideal, because neither the PS4 nor the PS5 supports this well. Sony has imposed the necessary restrictions on connecting third-party headsets via bluetooth. So it pays to check in advance whether the bluetooth headset is supported.
You need an extra USB receiver to still connect the headphones to your console, which is not always included as standard. Plug the receiver into an available USB port and go to the settings on your PS4 or PS5. Bee Devices you can search for bluetooth devices. Put the headset in pairing mode and you should see the name of the headset in the list.
Through the controller
You can also connect a headset via the 3.5mm audio port on the controller. This works the same for the PS4 and PS5, by plugging the headset’s 3.5mm jack into your controller’s headphone jack. In principle, the headphones should then work immediately.
Via optical input
There are not very many headsets that you connect directly via an optical input. This is also not useful, because then a wire runs from your console to your headset. It should be long enough to make it to the bank. There are wireless headphones that are sold with a base station that you connect via the optical input. After playing, you can hang the headset on the base station to charge it.
You connect such a base station to the mains and also to your PS4 via an optical cable. On a PS4, go to settings and navigate to Sound and screen nasty Audio Out Settings. Bee Primary output port do you choose Digital output (optical) and then you change Audio Format (Priority) nasty bitstream. Finally, in the settings, go to Devices and choose your audio devices. Here you select the headset. If you also want to use the microphone, choose at Output to headset in front of Chat audio.
The PS5 does not have an optical input, which makes connecting a headset in this way very cumbersome. You will then need a USB-to-optical input converter.
via dongle
By far the easiest method to connect a headset is via a dongle. Plug the supplied dongle into the USB port and the headphones should work right away. Just to be sure, check if the headset is supported.
