In addition to the popular Instagram Stories, you can now also send private messages that delete themselves. This is how Instagram’s new DM function works.
Instagram DM function overhauled
To streamline the Instagram app, regular text messages are listed in the same view as the self-deleting Instagram DMs. So from now on you have a handy list of all your messages. You can recognize these disappearing messages by the blue circle around the photo.
How to send an Instagram DM that removes itself:
- Open Instagram and tap the paper airplane at the top right of the screen (or swipe to the left);
- Tap the blue camera icon;
- Take your temporary photo or video and tap the arrow;
- Choose the group or contacts you want to send the message to.
By tapping the blue camera, you can also send a photo or video directly from a chat window that will delete itself. The recipient can view your creation once and repeat it once, although you will be notified if this happens. You can send the new DMs from version 10.16 of the Instagram app for iOS.
Instagram is working hard to further expand the messaging function of the app. This approach seems to work, as the number of users of the Instagram dm feature has grown from 300 million to 375 million since November 2016.
