Stalking via iPhone

Various programs and devices have caused problems with the iPhone in the past because they were used for stalking. It soon became apparent that the AirTags had a downside, because they were also used to unintentionally track someone’s location. For example, in 2022 a stalker used an iPhone to track down the location of a family in Disney World with an AirTag.

Security check on iPhone works against stalkers

In iOS 16, Apple introduced an important feature to improve the security of your iPhone against stalkers. Security Control gives you an overview of all shared data and the contacts who can see this information. It also shows which apps have access to certain iPhone features. This way you can immediately see whether there are any notable programs on your phone. The safety check is carried out as follows:

  1. Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone;

  2. Go to ‘Privacy and security’;

  3. Scroll down and choose ‘Security Check’;

  4. Tap ‘Manage sharing and access’;

  5. Use Face or Touch ID (or enter your code);

  6. Choose ‘Continue’ and complete all steps.

  7. Finally, tap ‘Done’.

The Safety Check is an extremely useful feature for disconnecting certain people, apps and devices. In total, you have to go through three major steps during the audit: information sharing, app access and the security of your account. This way you can see in one overview whether stalkers have access to the location of your iPhone or whether there are strange apps on your device. Don’t recognize an app? Then it is better not to grant them access to your data.

Finally, you also get the option to adjust your emergency contacts and Apple ID password. Is the person you don’t trust nearby? Then you can always press ‘Stop quickly’ in the corner of the screen, which will then immediately return to your home screen. Is your personal safety at risk? In that case, use Disaster Recovery to immediately log out of all apps and change the Apple ID password. This way you can be sure that your iPhone is protected against stalkers.

Prevent stalking via AirTag

Is your iPhone completely safe from stalkers? Then it is unfortunately still possible that an AirTag follows you unwantedly. Apple’s tiny tracker is easy to hide in your luggage or belongings, which has caused problems for people before. That’s why Apple has introduced a new feature where you receive a notification if you are being followed by an unknown tracker.

This notification automatically appears on your iPhone if you have been followed for a short time by an unknown AirTag (or smart fin particular). Do you not trust or recognize the tracker? Then it is advisable to stop the location of the AirTag and switch off the device. You can do this immediately when you receive the notification on your iPhone. With this feature, Apple prevents the tracker’s location from remaining visible on a stalker’s iPhone.
