This is how you secure WhatsApp with Touch ID or Face ID in 4 steps

Do you want to protect your apps extra well? Which can! In this tip, we’ll show you how to secure WhatsApp with Touch ID and Face ID.

How WhatsApp Touch ID and Face ID security works

If you have an iPhone, you probably unlock it dozens of times a day with a scan of your finger or face. These security measures can also be used by apps to protect the content. For example, you can only log in to your banking app after you have first performed a finger/face scan.

WhatsApp can also handle this extra security layer. Before you can access your WhatsApp messages, you must verify your identity. You do this on the basis of a scan with Touch ID or Face ID, depending on which model of iPhone you have. You must first enable the function:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom right corner;
  2. Choose ‘Account’ and then ‘Privacy’;
  3. Tap the ‘Screen lock’ option;
  4. Turn the slider behind ‘Ask for facial recognition’ (or Touch ID) to green.

Now that the feature is turned on, you can choose how often you should unlock the app in this way. There are four options: immediately, after 1 minute, after 15 minutes or after an hour. That way you don’t have to go through the Face ID or Touch ID animation every time you unlocked the app a minute ago.

Once you’ve enabled Face ID or Touch ID, you’ll need to go through an extra security step to access your messages. This makes the app protected, even if your iPhone itself is already unlocked or someone knows your passcode.

Is your iPhone already unlocked? Then the content of notifications is visible. When you receive an app, you (or someone else) can read it immediately. This is not the case with a locked iPhone: the contents of apps are hidden.
