MacOS Big Sur, the biggest update to the Mac in years, was released in mid-November. When you start your Mac after installing the new operating system, you will find numerous changes. The standard apps have been overhauled, the dock has been adjusted and the way in which notifications are displayed is different from what you are used to. Nevertheless, the launch of a new operating system does not always go smoothly and that is no different at Apple. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at some of the issues currently being reported with Big Sur.
1. Download failed
Many Mac users have trouble downloading the update immediately. Later it turned out that the problem was with the installation file, which prevented Big Sur from downloading automatically. In the meantime this has been solved by Apple, but if you still cannot download the update, first check if the problem is not with Apple by going to this status page to go. You see a red dot next to it macOS Software Update then you cannot download the update at that time. Patient waiting is the credo.
Also check if you have enough space to download the update. Big Sur requires approximately 15 GB of free space. You can check if you have enough space on your Mac by pressing the Apple icon at the top right of the menu bar and select About this Mac. Then go to Storage.
2. Installation not possible or takes a long time
Have you downloaded macOS Big Sur, but are having trouble installing? This is also a common problem. Many users see a black screen with a white Apple logo, while the installation bar shows no progression. It pays to be patient, sometimes the installation just takes a while. If the installation bar still hasn’t progressed after an hour or two, then it’s time to take action. Restart your Mac. In many cases, the installation bar will suddenly shoot forward and the installation continues. If this isn’t the solution either, try booting the Mac in Safe Mode.

3. Shorter battery life
After installing Big Sur, your Mac’s battery may drain faster than usual. This is probably related to certain tasks the operating system performs in the background. This is often the case if you have just installed a new OS. After a few hours or days, your Mac has often completed these tasks and you will notice that your battery life has returned to the old level.
If not, make sure to update all your apps to the latest version. You can also press the battery icon in the menu bar to see which apps are using up a lot of battery life. Quit these apps and see if the battery life improves.
4. Fan is noisy
Some Mac users are complaining about the fan in their Mac that has been making a lot of noise since the Big Sur update. This, too, is often related to the fact that your PC works hard behind the scenes to complete the installation of the operating system. Once this process has been completed, you will notice that the fans make a lot less noise.

5. Problems with Mail app
Many changes have been made to Apple’s default Mail app and several users are encountering problems here. On the one hand, this has to do with the new layout, which means that many users can no longer find certain functions. For example, you have to add the trash can to the menu again via the plus sign next to your Favorites. But there are also real bugs that sometimes make the Mail app unusable, such as the search function that no longer works optimally, the paper clip that cannot be found and folders that are suddenly empty and have to be added again. Unfortunately, there is no solution to these problems yet and the ball is now up to Apple to do something about it.
