A little over a year after Honda released the first photos of the new Civic Hatchback, the brand has extensively highlighted the European version of the model. The eleventh generation Civic comes – if we forget the Type-R – only as a hybrid Civic e:HEV to the Netherlands and is available from the end of this year.

With the arrival of the hybrid Civic e:HEV, every model that Honda delivers in Europe will be equipped with an electrified powertrain. With this, the brand has completed the first step in its electrification strategy. What’s coming in 2023? A lot! But the new hybrid Civic Hatchback is interesting enough to take a closer look at.

We don’t get the Honda Civic Sedan in Europe.

Hybrid

Although the Civic is supplied as a sedan in the United States, among others, Honda will only bring the new eleventh generation of the model to Europe as a hatchback. As far as body styles are concerned, there is little to choose from and the same can be said about the powertrains. Although Honda will eventually also bring the Civic to Europe as a fierce Type-R, the hybrid e:HEV variant is the only conventional variant that is put on the price list here. That Civic e:HEV gets a brand new 2.0 four-cylinder, a machine that runs according to the Atkinson cycle. This petrol engine works together with two electric motors. The system power is 184 hp and 315 Nm. Extensive technical specifications of this powertrain keep Honda under wraps, although we do know that the average consumption should be below 5 l/100 km.

design

Although the Honda Civic is immediately recognizable as such, little of the wild design of the previous model remains. The sharp creases, clean lines and large openings in the bumpers give way to calmer-looking design elements. The rear spoiler that split the rear window of the previous Civic into two parts has also been dropped. At the front, the family ties to the Accord and Insight are evident. The LED taillights are relatively simple in design and are tied together with an LED strip. Nice detail: the side mirrors are now attached to the doors and are therefore no longer attached to the A-pillar.

Compared to the previous generation Civic, the new 4.55 meter long model has grown in length by about 4 centimeters. The wheelbase (+3.5 centimeters) is also larger than that of the outgoing model. According to Honda, the new Civic Hatchback is 19 percent stiffer than its predecessor and thus the car seems to regain some of the traditional Civic sharpness. In order not to increase the weight too much, the hood is made of aluminum and the tailgate is made of resin.

Interior

The interior of the new Civic is relatively minimalist in design with a strip running the entire width of the dashboard that houses the air vents. In the tidy-looking dashboard we find, among other things, a 9-inch infotainment system that is more at eye level than the copy in the previous Civic. It can (wirelessly) work with Apple Carplay and Android Auto.

The new Honda Civic e:HEV will be launched in the fall of this year.

Since the introduction of the first-generation Civic in 1972, more than 27.5 million units have been sold worldwide across ten generations. The Civic can also be found in large numbers in the Netherlands. On the hunt for a used Honda Civic? Then take a look at our used car offer!
