Last night Hyundai presented a brand new fourth generation of the Tucson to the world. The new SUV is more extravagant than ever and will be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain!
The Tucson currently in Hyundai showrooms has been there since 2015. The technical brother of sister model Kia Sportage is therefore certainly no longer the youngest model of the South Korean manufacturer on paper. Hyundai is now presenting the all-new fourth-generation Tucson to the world public, an SUV with a very distinct exterior.
Hyundai is not afraid. The brand has made a stubborn model of the new i20 and with this new Tucson Hyundai is taking it a step further. The appearance of the new Tucson is clearly based on that of the Vision T, a study model that was shown in Los Angeles last year. Like that show car, the new Tucson has striking lighting at both the front and rear. At the front, the LED lighting is partly incorporated into the grille. At the back, the lamps consist of two diagonal LED stripes that are connected by a thin, string-tight LED strip that is placed above.
As usual, the Tucson also makes a small growth spurt when it changes generations. The new Hyundai Tucson is 4.5 meters long, making it 2 centimeters longer than its predecessor. In addition, with a width of 1.87 meters, the SUV is 1.5 centimeters longer than the outgoing model. The Tucson also grows in height, although the growth with 0.5 centimeters to 1.65 meters is not very worthy of mention. The distance between the front and rear axle increases by one centimeter to 2.68 meters. The extra centimeters give the rear passengers 2.6 centimeters extra legroom. The luggage compartment of the new Tucson is also larger than that of its predecessor. The regular petrol versions swallow 620 liters and can carry 1,799 liters of stuff with the rear seats folded. In the rear, the mild hybrid and hybrid variants with respectively 577-1,756 liters and 616-1,795 liters are slightly less spacious.
Not only the exterior of the new Tucson looks relatively spectacular, the inside of the SUV is also quite strikingly designed. That already starts with the steering wheel, which is completely ‘Hyundai 2020’ and that means that the Tucson, just like the new i20 and family members such as the Sonata, will get a hoop with four strikingly designed spokes. Behind the steering wheel is a rectangular digital display that functions as instruments. The entire center console appears to consist of a completely smooth surface. Physical buttons, if we forget the button for the warning lights for a moment, you will not find there. Instead, Hyundai gives the Tucson a large infotainment screen with touch-sensitive buttons below for climate control, among other things.
The new Tucson will be available at Dutch dealers from January 2021. The versions with hybrid and mild hybrid powertrains will follow first, the plug-in hybrid will follow, as will the sporty N-Line version, later. Prices are not yet known.
