This is why the Renault 5’s gear lever does not have a ‘P button’

The new Renault 5 is unique on the outside and inside, also within Renault’s model range. Even the ‘lever’ on the steering column is still unique to the 5, and there is a very special reason for this.

Inside the new Renault 5 we still see some parts from other (electric) Renaults here and there, but there are not many. The steering wheel is part of it, as are the switches for indicators and windshield wipers and that typical control satellite that Renault always uses for the audio system. Above that is the lever with which you select the direction of travel. This brings the total number of levers on the right side of the steering column to three, which is quite a lot, just like in the Megane E-Tech, Austral and Espace.

Yet the 5 is also slightly different in this respect. The ‘gear lever’ is unique to this model and lacks a button on the end, which you use in the models mentioned to select the P(-ark) position. Instead, the choice only consists of D, N and R. When you park, you put it in N and when the automatic handbrake is applied, you should find the car back where you left it. Still nice, because Not every 5 driver can do that.

Nice and all, but why doesn’t that 5 have a P button? This has everything to do with the personalization options that Renault wants to offer for this model. You can even replace this ‘lever’ with one with a color or print of your choice, and this is very easy due to the absence of that button. After all, it is now nothing more than a lever, the movements of which only lead to a signal in the steering column.

‘WT5, a baguette basket!’

The end of that lever can easily be replaced with all kinds of witty alternatives. A nice stylized 5 and a French flag are obvious, but how about a ‘stick’ with the text ‘WT5’ on it? Say that out loud and you’ll know what they mean. Renault offers a lot more cool stuff for the new retro EV, and that range will probably not decrease in the future. We note a lot of 3D printed boxes and containers, stickers, but also a wicker basket that can be used to transport your baguette. The most French accessory ever, and that fits the 5.
