The Porsche Macan must be retired this year and will make way for a completely new and fully electric model. The electric Macan does not remain Porsche’s only electric SUV. The Cayenne will also eventually be succeeded by an EV and it seems that we are now seeing the first visual evidence of this.
Later than originally planned, Porsche will launch a fully electric successor to the Macan this year. Initially, Porsche was going to deliver the electric Macan side by side with the current model equipped with combustion engines, but that is not going to happen. Porsche has now highlighted the electric Macan several times and the striking test model that we present to you in this article looks very similar. Yet there are indications that this is probably not a Macan, but an electric Cayenne.
The electric successor to the Cayenne is one of the new EVs that Porsche has in the pipeline. The Taycan – in all its manifestations – is currently the only electric Porsche, but a whole bunch will be added in the coming years. For example, an electric successor to the 718 family is planned for 2025 and roughly a year ago Porsche indicated that the Cayenne will also have an electric successor. We don’t know exactly when that will come. It is certain that it will not appear before 2025 in any case.
The wrapped prototype in these photos appears to be an early test example of the electric Macan. But appearances are deceiving. The track width of this test model is clearly wider than that of the electric Macan, which is reflected in, among other things, the sawn and widened wheel arches. We also have the impression that the windshield is at a slightly different angle than that of the electric Macan, although that may be an optical deception. For the time being, we assume that the electric Macan is based on a variant of the PPE platform jointly developed by Porsche and Audi. Audi will soon apply this to the A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, and Porsche to the electric Macan. That would immediately explain why Porsche brought in the electric Cayenne and electric Macan for early testing. The electric Cayenne will eventually replace the entire Cayenne family, although it is not inconceivable that the variant with combustion engines will still be available for a while.
By the way, Porsche’s line-up of electric SUVs does not only consist of the electric Macan and Cayenne. The manufacturer has already confirmed that a third electric SUV is in the works. It will be one size larger than the ‘Cayenne EV’ and will logically be positioned above it. As far as we know, this electric top SUV will be on the new SSP Sport platform.
