The last for the Rekord
Everyone knows the Opel Insignia, the Opel Vectra is also a well-known one and most people can also remember various Opel Rekords. The Olympia may be a bit more complicated, but it too belongs in that bloodline
Opel has a rich history when it comes to mid-range cars. For some, the Insignia may be the best-known name, but the name Rekord was on it the longest. In the 1950s, the name Rekord was still inextricably linked to the name Olympia. Opel released a car under that name in 1935, which owed its name to the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. After the war, Opel decided to put it back into production and the name Olympia was allowed to remain for a long time. Until the end of the 1950s, because the model already known as Olympia Rekord then handed over the baton to a mid-range car with the Rekord name central: the brand new Olympia Rekord P, with the ‘P’ for panoramic windscreen. The name Olympia would later return to a luxury Kadett.
Here we have an Olympia Rekord from just before the change to the Rekord P1. This is mainly reflected in its more traditional windshield and roof, but also in its size and the fact that it has Olympia on the front fenders. In this generation you could also find the name Rekord there. Anyone who can explain to us why there was sometimes Olympia and sometimes Rekord, can say so.
This is an original Dutch copy from 1957 that even seems to still have its original license plates. However, a lot of work has probably been done on the Opel to get it, or rather keep it, so nice. A look at the license plate history shows that the car had one owner from 1976 to 2021, so it could also be one that has simply been very well cared for. What is special is that the car has already been spotted on public roads, where most such old classics are still hibernating. Not that we mind, because that’s why AutoWeek forum member D oh was able to take these nice pictures of it and share them in our spotter topic.
