This way the battery in your MacBook lasts longer

The batteries in laptops, telephones and other devices are becoming more and more powerful, but you cannot avoid the fact that the battery of your device runs out faster and faster over the years. This also applies to the battery of your MacBook. How can you ensure that you enjoy your MacBook for longer?

Optimized charging

MacBooks, but also iPhones and iPads, have a special feature built in called Optimized Charging. This feature monitors your daily charging habits to extend your battery life. In certain situations, when the feature is turned on, charging your MacBook will slow down at 80% battery level.

The MacBook uses machine learning to learn your daily charging routine, so the optimized charging feature is only active when your MacBook predicts it will be plugged into a charger for an extended period of time. The option can be found in the Apple menu under System Preferences. click on Battery and then select Battery. In this menu you can Optimized charging on or off.

Take the cable out anyway

The optimized charging function is useful, but not completely waterproof. If you use your MacBook infrequently or if your laptop is always on your desk, it can be difficult for macOS to determine when to slow down the charging process. That is why it is always wise to remove the charging plug from your device as soon as your MacBook is sufficiently charged.

Ideally, at 40%, you grab the charger to charge the MacBook to about 80%. This ensures that the battery will not be put under too much pressure in an attempt to fully charge the device.

Avoid extreme temperatures

Perhaps an open door, but extreme temperatures are not good for your MacBook. Various studies show that extreme cold reduces the capacity of batteries by 5% more after charging 100 times than when your MacBook is in a warm room. So don’t accidentally leave your MacBook in your car on a cold winter night.

Use an app

There are various apps that allow you to set a charge level yourself so that the battery of your MacBook lasts longer, including the free app AlDente. In the app you can set the maximum charge level your laptop can have when it is connected to the power network. For example, choose 80%. Once this level is reached, your MacBook will automatically stop charging the battery.

Check battery status

Also check the current condition of your battery. It may already be time to replace the battery. Earlier we wrote about replacing your MacBook battery. Take a look at that article to see if it is useful in your situation.
