Twitter is rolling out an update that will make a lot of people happy. It is now possible to view messages in reverse chronological order. The newest messages are shown at the top of your timeline again.
Make Twitter timeline chronological
Twitter responds this way to the criticism of recent years. Many users were not satisfied with the display order of tweets, where messages were not shown on time, but in relevance. Fortunately, it is now possible to only get new tweets at the top of your timeline. To do this, follow the next steps:
Here’s how you see the latest tweets first:
- Download the Twitter update in the App Store;
- Open the app and go to the home screen;
- Tap the asterisks at the top right and confirm your choice;
- New tweets are now at the top of your timeline again.

Twitter learns from your use and automatically adjusts the order accordingly over time. So, if you often switch to reverse chronological order, this will become the default view at some point.
Response to criticism
Twitter has been using algorithms since 2016 to estimate which tweets you like. These posts will receive preferential treatment and will be placed at the top of your timeline. The downside to this is that you may miss some interesting posts. In addition, it is not useful while following a live event, such as a sports match.
The button to display tweets in order has been tested by a small group of Twitter users since September. They were so enthusiastic about the feature that Twitter is now rolling out the feature to all users. The update is rolling out in phases. So it may take a few days before you can use the feature.
